Children with fetal alcohol syndrome are prone to harmful and debilitating lifestyles. Even criminal behavior, retardation and mental illness have contributed to the list of things symptomatic of fetal alcohol syndrome. Everything is determined by how much and in what way the individual displays his or her symptoms. Of course, the most devastating effect of fetal alcohol syndrome is death. It is the most extreme, however, not the most unusual case when a severe fetal alcohol syndrome diagnosis is confirmed. There are, however symptoms other than the early features of fetal alcohol syndrome that will negatively affect a person's life forever.

1) Fetal alcohol syndrome - how to know:

o Often, the disorder can be recognized by abnormal facial features immediately.

o In infancy, there can be signs of fetal alcohol syndrome noted in sleep disturbances and sucking problems or disturbances.

These children will have trouble with poor science and mathematical skills, behavioral problems such as poor attention spans, as well as memory problems. So, needless to say, you should expect ha difficult child to care for.

2) There is a long list of symptoms that are possible to present when a child is diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome. Sad and terrible symptoms that effect a child with fetal alcohol syndrome are as follows:

o Growth problems such as small stature in relation to other children are permanent symptoms.

o Small eyes, unusual facial features, abnormalities, and even facial deformities can be a result.

o The coordination of a child with fetal alcohol syndrome is likely to be very poor, even to the extent of a movement disorder.

o There is a chance of extreme hyperactive behavior in an FAS child, which can be misdiagnosed easily. Especially when there are so many theories and new ideas about children displaying any sorts of troubled behavior.

o Learning disabilities are also a result of fetal alcohol syndrome, and are, like hyperactive disorders, very similar to other kinds of learning problems. They are among the more common symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome.

o A child with fetal alcohol syndrome can develop problems such as disabilities in speech and language. Developmental disabilities are some of the more severe and less treatable symptoms of children who must live with fetal alcohol syndrome.

o Mental retardation and a low IQ can easily result from fetal alcohol syndrome.

o Even into adulthood the disease will remain. It can cause problems with daily living and it can be the result of difficulty in judgment and decision making skills throughout someone's life.

It is said that the victims of fetal alcohol syndrome are more likely to be unemployed, perhaps to be criminals, to develop chronic neurological diseases, psychological issues etc. The more dangerous and violent of these symptoms have been seen in children who experience violence first-hand in their homes . . . between mothers and fathers or whomever. A baby eats, drinks, and often feels what the mother does during pregnancy. Therefore, not only is abstinence from alcohol extremely important, but calm and non-violent circumstances will help your baby later in life. And of course, once the baby is born, it is very important to try and continue to provide a peaceful environment for him or her.
